Country: new-zealand
Discovery and opportunity await us my friends, as together we broaden our horizons exploring the delightful Auckland suburb of Devonport on this live virtual tour. There’s a reason why Devonport is sometimes called Divineport - let me show you why! Devonport lies in the shadow of not one, but two volcanoes, which is why Auckland could be referred to as the City of Volcanoes. Join me on this livestream walking tour and we’ll trek the gorgeous dormant volcano, Maungauika. It last erupted more than 90,000 years ago, and while now a nature preserve, was formerly home to a Maori Pa defence area. We’ll begin our journey at the volcano’s summit, encountering native trees, plants, and wildlife, and pass the South Battery and preserved cannons at North Head Historic Reserve.Devonport is known for being the principal base for the vessels for the Royal New Zealand Navy. And so an additional nickname - The City of Sails. As you might imagine, the water plays a big part in the culture of Devonport, and if the timings are right, we might even see the yachts training for the 2021 America’s Cup, so keep your eyes peeled! Continuing on the coastal walkway to the North Battery, we will see some of the historic defence tunnels that were formed here in 1885 when Devonport was used as part of New Zealand’s military defence installation. There is a labyrinthine network of tunnels and bunkers hidden just beneath the surface, and one of the key attractions here. We’ll also see the observation turrets and the beautiful view of beaches and islands of the Hauraki Gulf, the entrance to Waitemata Harbour and Auckland. Down into the charming streets of Devonport, we’ll get a feel for this historic city and enjoy the beautiful Victorian houses that give so much character to this place. In fact, one of the things Devonport is famous for is its heritage and preservation. Our livestream walking tour will end at Torpedo Bay looking across the harbour to downtown Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, as the sun glimmers across the bay. Divine, I’m sure you’ll agree.
