Prague’s Jewish Quarter: A Walk Through History and Remembrance

Country: czech

The Holocaust tour begins at the Rudolphinum, a historic classical music concert hall that serves as the introduction to Prague's Jewish Quarter and its rich cultural heritage. From there, we move to the exteriors of the Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the oldest Jewish burial grounds in the world, offering a glimpse into the lives and traditions of Prague's Jewish community since the 15th century. The tour continues with views of the Klausen Synagogue and the Ceremonial Synagogue, reflecting the community's spiritual and communal practices, before arriving at the Old-New Synagogue, the oldest still-operating synagogue in the world, surrounded by fascinating legends such as the Golem of Prague. Next, we stop at the Jewish Town Hall, featuring its rare Hebrew clock with counterclockwise-moving hands, and then visit the Pinkas Synagogue, a powerful Holocaust memorial whose walls bear the names of over 77,000 Czech Jews who perished during the Holocaust. We then admire the Renaissance architecture of the Maisel Synagogue, built in the 16th century, and visit the site of the Former Jewish School, which operated until 1942, offering insights into Jewish education before the Nazi occupation. The tour concludes at Old Town Square, home to the Astronomical Clock, where we reflect on the Prague Uprising of May 1945 and the city's liberation amidst the charm of its historic center.
