Discover the colorful and passionate Caminito neighborhood of La Boca, Buenos Aires! Join me on this interactive live virtual tour packed with vibrant culture, historic traditions, and unfiltered street life. You’ll be able to ask me questions and chat with fellow participants as we explore this energetic, famous borough!La Boca is where millions of Italian immigrants, many of them Genovese, established themselves, looking for work and opportunity. Here, two unique activities blossomed - the Tango and Football (or soccer if you're from The US!) Tango is an original and passionate dance born in Buenos Aires. While it was danced all around the city, today in Caminito and the surrounding area you can see the famous Tango street dancers.La Boca got its name from a bay with the shape of an open mouth (la boca means 'the mouth' in Spanish). The immigrants worked at the harbor and in small, overcrowded tin tenement housing, saving money to send tickets to their families back in Europe. Many times, the housing caught fire, and so in this area was born the tradition of the volunteer firemen.Caminito means ‘little trail’ a reference to a famous Tango. This pedestrian street was not always as happy and colorful as is it now. Formerly an abandoned railway branch and then improvised soccer field and a trash dump, in the 1960’s it was completely remodeled by Benito Quinquela, the most renowned Argentinian artist. Benito recreated the area into an outdoor art gallery and delivered the happy colors of his paints to the houses. The impact was so vast that all the area adopted his colorful style. Fellows of Benito donated their sculptures and bas-reliefs, making this unique place in Buenos Aires a must-sees area. Today when you visit, you’ll see people walking around the vibrant streets, busy bars and restaurants with Tango dancers, and street painters; all the area is boiling with life on a sunny day.Together, we will go along Caminito and see the artisans and art, and we will discover the iconic tributes to the firemen and the old bridge. We will walk the area of the canteens where the dancers perform, and we will enter some of the former tenements which today are happy malls. All around we will see the passion for football in infinite flags, human-size puppets, and any kind of decoration about the most popular soccer team of Argentina! There are so many wonderful sites I look forward to sharing with you on this live stream walking tour. Join me and discover the local color and flavor! Vamanos!
